Notice of Committee Meeting
There will be a regular meeting of the committee on
Public Safety
Meeting to take place remotely on Zoom Meetings on Monday July 27th at 6:30PM
Per order of the Chair: Terence Murphy
Agenda:
Item 1: . Councilor Greaney: Ordered that the stop sign facing north at the intersections of Portland St and Mackenzie Ave be made more visible to traffic moving north on Portland St, or that it be moved to the other side of the street. High bushes and parked vehicles re concealing the sign creating a dangerous situation.
Item 2: Councilor Murphy: Ordered that a raised sidewalk be installed between the gym building at the Dean campus and the main building.
Item 3: . Councilor Murphy, Lebron_Martinez, Tallman, Lisi: Ordered that the public safety committee meet with the director of the board of health, representatives from Holyoke Health Center, including Darren Beek, as well as Jose Bou as a representative from the school department, to discuss any ideas to improve the environment within the four lower neighborhoods, where statistics indicate the highest levels and most severe cases of asthma. Asthma has also negatively impacted school attendance. Ideas to be discussed could include planting more trees in each neighborhood; getting real-time air tests throughout the city by seeking volunteers who would use asthma inhalers embedded with GPS trackers to identify the most polluted neighborhoods.
Item 4: Councilor Leahy, McGee, Tallman: Ordered that the DPW installs a light on the American flag at Highland Park.
Item 5: Councilor McGee: Ordered that the public safety committee invite in representatives of the Boys & Girls Club in order to get an update on the clean up efforts to the old ski house.
Item 6.Councilor Anderson-Burgos: Ordered that a study be done at the intersection of West Franklin and Linden St to see what can be done to improve safety. It’s a dangerous intersection where multiple accidents have occurred on many occasions.
Item 7: Councilor Anderson-Burgos: Ordered that the city council form a volunteer commission to study and recommend solutions to comprehensively address panhandling in the city of Holyoke. Members of the commission should have a range of backgrounds and expertise related to the various concerns and contributors to panhandling. These should include but not be limited to public safety, public health, employment, and education.
